Coral Knot
The lines in the chart represent fabric threads.
At 1 and working to the left from the last knot make a loop as shown in the diagram,
Insert the needle under the loop at 2,
At 3 make a stitch in the fabric and with the needle on top of the loop gently pull the thread forming the knot.
I do not like to pull this knot as tight as I possibly could, I pull out the slack and leave a little loft in the knot so you notice it when you look at it. If you pull this knot tight you could miss it when you looked at it in a design, especially if you used silk or fine cotton thread. And by not pulling it tight I can remove it if I need to redo the stitch by inserting a tapestry needle into the knot and gently wiggling it a bit. If I leave the needle tip in the stitch at this point I can reposition it a bit along the connecting thread between the knots and then pull out the thread slack. I also place a spare needle tip in the knot as I pull out the slack, this too allows me to position the knot in just the right spot without having to loosen the knot. This is a stitch I have to practice a few times on the edges of the fabric, it always improves for me after a couple of practice stitches. ©2001 Linda Fontenot, www.AmericanFolkArts.com and All Rights Reserved.
